WIAMO stands for Rwanda Women In / And Mining Organization, a local Non-Governmental Organization that aims at promoting gender equality and social inclusion in the Rwanda’s mining sector. WIAMO got officially launched in 2014 when its Constitution got signed and notarized and its activities started being carried out. These were centred to advocacy, awareness raising, and research. WIAMO’s operations got first approved by the Rwanda Governance Board (RGB) in 2016.
WIAMO has as mission “to promote gender equality and social inclusion in the Rwanda’s mining sector”.
WIAMO envisages being the catalyst of the “effective integration of women in the mining workforce”, that is, to see a mining sector where at least 30% of both the workforce and investors are women and where women and children’s rights are protected, both in mines and communities.
Increase women's representation in mining from 9.4% (2012) and 16% (2017) to 30% by 2030, ensuring significant integration.
Train women in core mining skills, minerals processing, and mining administration to enhance their roles and opportunities in the industry.
Advocate for and assist in creating and empowering women's mining cooperatives and companies to enhance their industry presence and success.
Create a women-friendly mine environment with change rooms, health and childcare facilities, and female lavatories to meet their needs.
Ensure mining benefits women, protect female miners from harassment and GBV, and safeguard women and children's rights in mines and communities.
Build a strong women’s mining network, support women's saving groups, SACCOs, and micro-finances, and enable funding for mining investments.
Offer career and lifestyle support, retention strategies, social security, maternity leave, alternative placements for pregnant women, and ECD facilities.
Ensure community pride in mining through gender-responsive CSR, revenue sharing, environmental protection, and preventing child labor.
Ensure gender-sensitive mining laws and policies, and catalyze internal gender equality and anti-GBV policies in companies and cooperatives.
